Back in college again!

Year three is a bit stressful as I'm jugging classes, studio time, and an internship at the National Photographic Archive. Starting my first proper printed photo book this semester - so I'm probably going to spend the next three months obsessing about paper weight, image quality, and design. I'm creating a still life series for this and my theme is climate change. I suspect I'm going to have fun/a mental breakdown translating such a big real life issue into a small inanimate still life, but I like a challenge, I guess?

It's been a million years since I've posted...

...and I found myself guiltily looking at my last blogpost as I was migrating a few things from LJ to DW, and wondering how tumblr ate my soul.

It's probably because Tumblr is not as much of a commitment as LJ/DW and my life has been eaten up in the last couple years by a series of unfortunate events that culminated in me saying to myself. 'Well, fuck it, if my life is gong to be a shit heap it's going to be a shit heap of my own design"

Which is how I ended up back in full time education and completing an honours degree in photography.

On the whole, it has been fun if rather stressful. It's also been a rather steep leaning curve as the last time I was in college it was back in the dark ages when a camera still only used film. Also, this whole 'group learning' thing has seemed to have taken off in the last couple of decades. Group projects, group presentations...in the old days, it was everyone for themselves, Gladiator style :P It's slightly frustrating if you're a known as a 'stronger' student, so they pair you with the weaker ones of the class and basically you end up doing the lion share of the work in order to keep your grade average up.

I get to play with lots of really shiny cameras though, and I'd be totally into talking about them if anyone is interested. I use both digital and film (medium format and 5x4)

Actually, I'm more than a bit spoiled, at the moment, as not only is the genfic pretty awesome, but my favourite pairing is also getting some excellent representation (Uhura/Spock, a totally illogical OTP!). There are few OOC Mills & Boon type stories beginning to surface but, thankfully, they're still a minority.

Here are a few stories that A) I really liked and B) I actually remembered to add to my memories! (This latter part is very important!) These are all links to LJ:

Your Government at work - ten months later, and just before a European Parliament election...

So, today I found an email from Proinsias De Rossa (an Irish MEP) in my inbox and, as it had been ten months since I'd fired off my email to him, I had to scratch my head for a moment to remember what had annoyed me so much that I'd actually pressed the send button on my email.

What was it? A proposed regulation that would give my government the power to read my emails, and listen in on any communications I may have online. To which I say to Brussels, are you mad? Have you not had any dealings with the Irish government - the nod, wink, and nudge brigade?

Anyway, here is my email

Keep in mind, that I'm usually quite happy with Proinsias De Rossa's work in Brussels - but from the email's opening sentence, in which he told me was pleased to inform me that he'd voted in favour of the amendment, I knew I was getting a reply from someone who hadn't even bothered reading the first paragraph of my email, never mind the points I'd made.

Word of advice, Mr De Rossa, If you can't be bothered to read what one of your constituents has to say, then don't even bother to send them a cut and paste reply. It's more honest that way.

P.S. I really don't care about how many people voted in favour or against the amendment, I want to know why you voted in favour of it - or was it a cut and paste ballot, too?
